Single ikat

The cloth gets its motif from one resist-dyed yarn direction: warp or weft.

Two cotton yarn arrangements: patterned vertical yarn with plain indigo horizontal yarn on the left, both directions patterned in indigo and ivory on the right

Double ikat

The motif combines resist-dyed yarn in both directions, warp and weft.

Name the ikat type with the fabric reference.

How the yarn gets its pattern

Tight bindings reserve undyed sections of yarn while the exposed sections take the dye.

We also supply ikat-look screen prints and digital prints.

Common questions about ikat

Is ikat print fabric the same as woven ikat?

No. An ikat-look print applies the motif to cloth. Name it as a print in the fabric enquiry.

Is ikat cotton always single ikat?

No. Cotton is also used for double ikat. State the fibre and the ikat type separately in the brief.

Are ikat, Patola and Pochampally interchangeable names?

No. Ikat names the technique. Patan Patola is a double-ikat sari, usually in silk; Rajkot Patola can be single ikat. Pochampally names a regional ikat craft whose materials include cotton and silk.

Where is ikat made in India?

Pochampally in Telangana, Patan in Gujarat and Sambalpur in Odisha are among its centres. Pochampally Ikat, Patan Patola and Sambalpuri Bandha Saree & Fabrics are registered Geographical Indications.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

Can we buy ikat fabric without ordering garments?

Yes. We supply ikat fabric on its own, by the metre.

Is ikat made like batik or ajrakh?

No. Batik uses a wax resist on cloth. Ajrakh uses block-applied resist printing in single-sided and double-sided forms; see block printing.
