Carded or combed cotton?

Carded

Carded yarn goes without combing, the further step used where carded yarn does not meet the requirement.

Combed

Combing removes short fibres and neps, and the better-aligned fibres make a more uniform yarn. Combed cotton knits can be very soft.

Carded or combed goes on the yarn line of the tech pack.

Specifying cotton on a tech pack

Fibre content
State 100% cotton, or name each fibre in the blend and its percentage. For polycotton, give the cotton and polyester shares.
Yarn count and ply
Give the count and ply, such as 2/40s. Use the yarn count converter for Ne, tex, Nm and lea.
Yarn preparation
State whether the cotton yarn should be carded or combed.
Spinning
Specify ring-spun or open-end yarn. Ring-spun fabrics have a soft hand. Basic open-end yarn normally costs less at the same count.
Construction
For wovens, give the weave, yarn counts and ends and picks per inch. For knits, name the structure, such as single jersey or piqué.
Fabric weight
Give the target in g/m² and the tolerance.
Finish
Specify the finish, such as mercerised or sanforised. A permanent-press finish can reduce wrinkling.
Care
Set the washing and drying instructions. Chlorine bleach may yellow or weaken cotton with chemical or resin finishes.

Common questions about cotton

Can we buy cotton fabric and yarn on their own?

Yes. We sell cotton fabric by the metre to garment makers, and catalogue yarn on its own. See fabrics and yarns.

What does GSM tell us about cotton fabric?

It tells you the mass of fabric per unit area. Include the construction and yarn specification alongside the weight in your brief.

What does polycotton change compared with cotton?

Polycotton combines polyester's resistance to wrinkling and shrinkage with cotton's absorbency.

Do you supply long-staple cotton, including Supima and Giza?

Yes. Long-staple and extra-long-staple cotton, including Supima and Giza, are supplied on request. Long staple (LS) means fibres 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches long. Extra-long staple (ELS) means 1⅜ inches or longer.

Can you meet our cotton programme's certification requirements?

Yes. Every order ships to the standards your programme requires. See certifications and organic cotton.

How long does a cotton garment sample take?

The first garment sample takes 4 to 10 days. Bulk takes from 35 days after sample approval.
