Hemp and cotton before blending

Cottonisation adapts hemp to existing spinning machinery and allows it to be blended with cotton in different percentages.

Hemp fibre

Hemp fibre is naturally coarser and stiffer than cotton.

Cotton fibre

Cotton has a fineness suited to spinning.

Start with a garment reference or swatch to shortlist fabric weights. Assess the finished hand, drape and opacity, then record GSM, tolerance and finish for the garment sample.

Common questions about hemp

Is hemp suitable for clothing, and does it get softer?

Yes. Hemp clothing softens with washing and wear.

How do I compare hemp fabric with cotton?

Match the construction and finished GSM of the two swatches, then assess them against the same garment reference. For all-cotton options, see cotton.

Is hemp fabric the same as linen?

No. Linen is made from flax. Compare finished linen and hemp swatches for the intended style.

Is hemp the same as jute?

No. Jute yarn is traditionally used for hessian cloth. See jute for tote and shopper specifications.

Can we buy hemp fabric without finished garments?

Yes. We supply hemp fabric on its own, by the metre, to garment makers.

How do we get a price for hemp fabric or clothing?

For fabric, send the fabric reference, composition, construction, finished GSM, width and metres required. For garments, send a reference garment or tech pack, quantity, size breakdown and target price.
