Weigh a cut swatch to get its GSM, or convert a weight between grams per square metre and ounces per square yard.
GSM from a cut swatch
A standard GSM cutter takes a 100 cm² disc.

How GSM is measured
GSM is the weight of a fabric in grams per square metre. A 100 cm² GSM cutter cuts one hundredth of a square metre, so the weight of that sample in grams multiplied by 100 is the GSM.
A 100 cm² sample that weighs 1.8 g is a 180 g/m² fabric. With a sample of any other size, divide its weight by its area in square metres.
g/m² and oz/yd²
One ounce per square yard is 33.906 g/m², the factor NIST publishes. To go from oz/yd² to g/m², multiply by 33.906; to go back, divide.
A 180 g/m² fabric is about 5.31 oz/yd², and a 5 oz/yd² fabric about 170 g/m².
Weights by fabric
The weights buyers work to differ by fabric and garment. The linen and twill pages set them out on a weight scale, and cotton lists the weights of the house catalogue qualities.
Common Questions
How do I calculate the GSM of a fabric?
Cut a sample with a 100 cm² GSM cutter, weigh it in grams, and multiply by 100. A 1.8 g sample is 180 g/m².
How do I convert GSM to oz?
Divide by 33.906. A 180 GSM fabric is about 5.31 oz/yd², and 150 GSM about 4.42 oz/yd².
How do I convert oz to GSM?
Multiply by 33.906. A 5 oz/yd² fabric is about 170 g/m², and 8 oz/yd² about 271 g/m².
