Fabric Weight and GSM: A Buyer's Guide to Specifying Cloth

GSM is the fabric-weight specification that turns a description such as “heavyweight jersey” into a number a mill, sampling team and inspection team can work to. It is central to handfeel, opacity, drape, warmth, yield and fabric cost, yet it cannot describe cloth on its own. Fibre, yarn, construction and finish decide what that number feels like in a garment.

Set a target GSM, record the finished condition, agree a tolerance and approve a physical reference before bulk fabric is booked. This makes quotes comparable across suppliers.

What does GSM mean in fabric?

GSM means grams per square metre: the mass of one square metre of fabric. A 180 GSM single jersey weighs 180 grams for each square metre; a 320 GSM brushed sweatshirting weighs 320 grams for each square metre. It gives a common measure across fabric widths, because the area is fixed.

Higher GSM usually means more material in a given area. The fabric may feel denser, more substantial and less transparent. It may also have more body. Those are useful starting expectations, not guarantees. A lofty fleece can feel bulky at a lower GSM than a compact interlock, while a fine woven fabric can feel crisp at a weight that would make a knit feel light.

GSM is measured by cutting a known area from the fabric and weighing it, then scaling the result to one square metre. This makes it a good control point at development and bulk stages. It does not replace a handfeel approval, because the same measured weight can be achieved with different yarns and constructions.

For knitwear, state whether the fabric is single jersey, rib, interlock, piqué or another construction. For a woven garment, state the weave such as poplin, twill, canvas or satin. GSM becomes useful when it sits beside those details.

How is GSM different from ounces per square yard?

GSM and ounces per square yard describe the same property in different units. Ounces per square yard, often written oz/yd², is common in denim and may appear in briefs written for North American product teams. A 12 oz denim refers to its weight over a square yard, not to the weight of a finished garment.

One ounce per square yard is about 33.9 GSM. The conversion is useful for checking a supplier’s fabric card or translating a reference sample, but the original unit should always be shown in the specification. A bare “12 oz” can be misunderstood if the area basis is missing, and a number copied after conversion can introduce rounding differences.

The table is directional. A 170 GSM cotton jersey and a 170 GSM cotton-elastane jersey will not behave identically. Use the unit conversion to align the brief, then sample the actual construction.

Which GSM range suits a garment type?

The suitable range begins with the garment’s job. A base layer needs movement, breathability and controlled opacity. An overshirt needs more structure. A sweatshirt needs enough mass and surface character to hold its shape and give the intended warmth. The right number comes from those requirements, not from a label such as premium.

Indicative ranges help an enquiry start in the right area. They are not a substitute for a reference fabric, because fibre blend, stitch density, weave, finishing and garment wash all change the result. A light-coloured jersey may need more opacity than a darker colour in the same construction. A loose knit may need a higher GSM to feel stable.

For denim, ounce weight may be the more familiar starting point, though the finished specification can still record GSM. For a new jersey style, compare the proposed cloth with the intended garment on a hanger and on body.

Why can two fabrics with the same GSM feel different?

Two fabrics at the same GSM can feel markedly different because GSM measures mass, not fabric architecture. A compact, combed cotton jersey has a different surface and recovery from an open-end jersey at the same weight. A woven twill distributes yarn differently from a plain weave. Brushing, peaching, enzyme washing, compaction and other finishing processes also change surface, thickness and drape.

Fibre blend matters too. Cotton, polyester, viscose, linen and elastane each affect moisture handling, recovery, lustre and handle. The blend percentage belongs in the specification, along with the construction and finish. A mill cannot reliably reproduce an approved fabric from GSM and colour alone.

This is why a useful development request includes the end use, target handfeel, fibre composition, construction and colour direction. If the reference garment is available, send a swatch or whole garment and identify which aspects must be matched. The first sampling conversation is the right time to separate essential characteristics from details that can be developed.

How does GSM affect fabric cost and garment yield?

GSM affects cost because fabric consumption is normally calculated from the garment pattern, fabric width and weight. If construction, fibre and finish remain comparable, a heavier fabric uses more yarn per metre and more weight per garment. That changes the fabric line in the cost build-up. It can also alter cutting, sewing and finishing behaviour, particularly where seam bulk or garment washing is involved.

Weight is not the only cost driver. A lower-GSM fabric with a specialised yarn, a difficult dye, a complex finish or a small colour run may cost more per metre than a heavier standard cloth. Fabric width also changes yield. Comparing two quotes on GSM alone can therefore produce the wrong conclusion.

Ask for the fabric assumptions behind the FOB price, including the unit of measure and whether the weight is greige or finished. This does not turn cost into a single fixed number. It gives the team a way to see which assumption has moved when two fabric options differ.

What GSM tolerance should be specified?

Specify a target GSM and a tolerance that the mill can make and the inspection plan can check. Fabric weight varies across a roll and between production lots because yarn, moisture, knitting or weaving conditions, dyeing and finishing all affect the final result. A tolerance acknowledges that normal production variation without leaving the acceptance band undefined.

The tolerance should be agreed for the particular fabric, condition and test method. Around ±5% is commonly used as a starting point for many finished apparel fabrics, but it is not a universal rule. A buyer may need a tighter or different tolerance where fabric performance, opacity, a customer specification or a finished reference makes that necessary. Put the agreed band in the tech pack and have the mill confirm it during development.

State the point of measurement. A greige GSM is measured before dyeing and finishing; a finished GSM is measured on cloth ready for cutting. If the garment will be washed, record whether approval is against the fabric before wash, the finished garment after wash, or both. Mixing these conditions creates disputes even when every measurement is accurate.

How should GSM be checked and recorded from sampling through bulk?

Check GSM at the points where a change can still be managed. During fabric development, measure the submitted swatch and compare it with the requested construction and handfeel. Record the result with the lab dip or colour submission if colour is also being approved. At garment-sample stage, examine the actual weight after the processes that affect the final garment, especially wash and finishing.

Once the fabric is approved, seal a swatch and record the measured GSM, test condition, construction, composition, finish and approval date. The bulk team then has a reference that is more useful than an email description. If bulk testing shows a result outside the agreed band, check the location sampled, fabric condition and roll variation before deciding the action. The result needs context.

Keep comments consolidated. If an approved sample says “use the heavier quality” while the tech pack says 180 GSM, the mill has two instructions. A single revised specification, sent to each relevant party, prevents a verbal preference from becoming a bulk interpretation.

To make those checks useful, the specification needs the target finished GSM and tolerance; fibre composition; yarn and construction details where they matter; usable width; finish; colour standard; shrinkage or performance requirements; and the physical reference. Add the garment use and the process the cloth will receive after it leaves the mill, such as garment dyeing or washing. Those processes can change the final cloth substantially.

If the fabric is new, confirm mill minimums before the range is finalised. A mill may set a minimum by colour, yarn or construction because preparing the run involves material and process setup. Minimums are set per style and confirmed at enquiry. Early confirmation can prevent a fabric choice from reaching bulk with an unworkable quantity or cost assumption.

Short FAQ: common GSM questions

Is a higher GSM always better quality?

No. Higher GSM means more mass per area. Quality depends on whether the fibre, yarn, construction, finish and performance suit the garment. A well-made 160 GSM T-shirt can be the correct product; adding weight may make it too warm or too structured.

Can GSM change after washing?

Yes. Washing, drying and finishing can change fabric dimensions and weight per area. Approve the condition that matters for the product and record whether the GSM applies before or after garment processing.

Can one GSM be used for every colour?

Yes, when the same construction, yarn and finish are used, but confirm bulk results by colour where appearance or opacity is critical. Dyeing and finishing can cause variation, especially across light and dark shades.

Should the tech pack list GSM or oz/yd²?

List the unit used for the approved reference and add the equivalent unit when different teams use both. State the unit in full and avoid a number with no area basis.

What is the right fabric-weight decision before bulk?

The right decision is not to choose the highest GSM on offer. It is to approve the fabric that gives the garment its intended cover, handfeel, drape, durability and cost, then make that approval repeatable with a measured specification and sealed reference.

GSM is the number that keeps the discussion concrete. Pair it with construction, fibre, finish, condition and tolerance. That gives a mill a clear brief, gives costing a common basis and gives bulk quality control a standard that can be checked before the finished garment is at risk.
