## Direct and indirect counts

Yarn counts come in two kinds. A direct count gives the mass of a fixed length of yarn, so a higher number is a heavier yarn: tex, decitex and denier work this way. An indirect count gives the length in a fixed mass, so a higher number is a finer yarn: Ne, Nm and linen lea work this way.

The converter goes through tex, the mass in grams of 1,000 metres of yarn, and computes each constant from the definitions of the pound and the yard, so no rounding builds up between systems.

## The formulas

Ne = 590.5 ÷ tex. English cotton count is the number of 840-yard lengths in one pound of yarn.

Linen lea = 1,653.5 ÷ tex. Lea counts the 300-yard leas in one pound.

Nm = 1,000 ÷ tex. Metric count is the number of 1,000-metre hanks that weigh one kilogram.

Denier = 9 × tex, because denier weighs 9,000 metres where tex weighs 1,000; decitex = 10 × tex.

Between Ne and denier the two steps combine: denier = 5,314.9 ÷ Ne, and Ne = 5,314.9 ÷ denier. A 30s cotton is about 177 denier, a 40s about 133, and a 150 denier yarn about 35s Ne.

## Plied yarns such as 2/40s

A plied count gives the number of plies and the count of each: 2/40s is two 40s yarns twisted together, and it weighs the same as a single 20s. In an indirect system the resultant is the single count divided by the plies.

In tex the resultant is the sum, written with a capital R before the number: 2/40s is about R29.5 tex. The converter leaves out the small change in length that twisting causes.

## Counts in the house catalogue

Surajmal Shobhachand supplies grey cotton yarn from 7/1 to 80/1 in carded and combed qualities, and mercerised yarn from 2/40s to 2/80s in grey and dyed. See [yarns](/products/yarns) for the full range.

## Common Questions

### How do I convert Ne to denier?

Divide 5,314.9 by the Ne count. That is 590.5 ÷ Ne to reach tex, then multiplied by 9. A 30s cotton comes to about 177 denier, and a 40s to about 133.

### How do I convert denier to Ne?

Divide 5,314.9 by the denier. A 150 denier yarn is about 35.4s in English cotton count.

### Is a higher count finer or coarser?

It depends on the system. In Ne, Nm and lea a higher number is a finer yarn; in tex, decitex and denier a higher number is a coarser one.

### What is 60 lea in Nm and tex?

About 36.3 Nm and 27.6 tex. Sixty leas of 300 yards to the pound is 18,000 yards per pound.
