## The motif and its colours

Give each part of the motif a colour reference. Include a painted reference for the brushwork.

## Specifying hand painting on a tech pack

- **Artwork link**: Include a link to the sketch, photograph or artwork.

- **Garment**: Name the style and give its sizes.

- **Fabric and ground colour**: State the composition, construction, weight and ground colour. See [cotton](/materials/cotton), [linen](/materials/linen) or [denim](/materials/denim-fabric) for base cloth options.

- **Motif dimensions**: Give the finished width and height in centimetres.

- **Placement**: Mark the position on the garment drawing, with measurements from a fixed point.

- **Painted extent**: Mark which areas of the design receive colour.

- **Colour references**: Give a reference for each paint colour.

- **Paint and brushwork reference**: Name the paint if specified. Attach a painted piece or photograph showing the brushwork to match.

- **Intended care**: State the washing and care instructions to test against.

- **Quantity per colourway**: Give the number of garments by size for each design and colourway.

The design can be traced onto the cloth before painting. Include the finished motif dimensions with the artwork.

### Is all Indian hand painting called Kalamkari?

No. Kalamkari is a pen-work tradition that applies patterns to cloth with a handmade pen. Srikalahasti in Andhra Pradesh is one centre for the work. We supply Kalamkari to your brief.
