## From PFD to a dyed garment

## Reactive or cold pigment on cotton

### Reactive

Reactive dyes bond with cotton and give good wash fastness. Specify an even finish with the shade reference.

Two folded sage-olive cotton T-shirts, one evenly coloured and one with softly uneven colour

### Cold pigment

Specify cold pigment dyeing for an uneven colour finish. Include a garment photograph showing the variation to match.

Specify the colour system and the finish reference separately.

## Specifying garment dyeing on a tech pack

- **Style and sizes**: Include the garment drawing or style reference and the size range.

- **Quantity per colour**: Give the quantity for each colour, split by size.

- **Fabric reference, composition, construction and GSM**: State the base quality and use PFD fabric from one lot for each garment. For fabric choices, see [single jersey](/materials/single-jersey), [French terry](/materials/french-terry), [fleece](/materials/fleece) and [twill](/materials/twill).

- **Target shade and acceptance**: Attach the colour reference and state the accepted shade variation.

- **Colour system and finish reference**: Name the dye system and attach a garment photograph for the finish.

- **Thread and trim treatment**: Specify the sewing thread and trims, with the colour each should have after dyeing. Select and test sewing thread for dye compatibility with the garment fabric.

- **Post-dye measurements**: Give the finished garment measurements and tolerances.

- **Care, test methods and acceptance**: State the intended care, required tests and agreed acceptance criteria.

## Common questions about garment dyeing

### Can you supply garment-dyed T-shirts?

Yes. We develop plain and pocket styles to the fabric weight and finish in your brief.

### Is pigment dyeing the same as garment dyeing?

No. Some exhaustible pigments can be used in garment dyeing. Garment dyeing is the production stage.

### How does garment dyeing differ from yarn and piece dyeing?

It colours a later stage of the product. [Yarn dyeing](/techniques/yarn-dyeing) colours spun yarn before weaving or knitting. Piece dyeing colours woven or knitted cloth.

### How long does a garment-dyed sample take?

A first garment-dyed sample takes 4 to 10 days once the brief is agreed.
