## Merino fibre fineness, in microns

Fibre diameter is measured in microns. Finer fibres feel softer against the skin.

- **Below about 19.5 microns**: Base layers and fine knitwear worn next to the skin.

- **About 19.5 to 22 microns**: Commonly used for knitwear and outerwear.

## Worsted or woollen yarn?

### Worsted

Worsted yarn makes flatter, lighter and smoother cloth for traditional tailoring.

Slate-grey yarn bundles: smooth worsted yarn on the left and bulkier, fuzzy woollen yarn on the right

### Woollen

Carding leaves fibres less neatly aligned than combing. Woollen yarn is bulkier and fuzzier, and is used for sweaters.

State the yarn type alongside the knit or weave in the brief.
