## Viscose fabric weights (GSM) by garment

What viscose mills list in their catalogues, as a guide to the market. The weight for a programme is agreed on the sample.

110 g/m²

Viscose challis for dresses and blouses

150–160 g/m²

Viscose jersey for knit tops

200–235 g/m²

Polyester-viscose cloth for trousers

## Match the drape for a fabric order

Send a fabric reference with the target GSM and metres required. We quote a viscose or blend fabric for the garment.

## Specifying viscose on a tech pack

- **Supply and quantity**: State the garment and number of pieces, or fabric and metres required. Include the target price.

- **Fibre content**: Give each fibre and its percentage. Specify [modal](/materials/modal) or [lyocell](/materials/lyocell) by name if either is required.

- **Construction and count**: Name the weave or knit and yarn count. Use the [yarn count converter](/tools/yarn-count-converter) when converting the count.

- **Finished GSM**: Set the finished weight and its tolerance. Use the [GSM calculator](/tools/gsm-calculator) to calculate weight from a cut fabric specimen.

- **Usable width**: State the usable fabric width in centimetres.

- **Hand and drape**: Attach the fabric reference and describe the required finish.

- **Colour or print**: Give the colour reference or print artwork.

- **Stretch**: Specify the required stretch direction, extension and recovery.

- **Care and dimensions**: Set the intended care and allowed dimensional change after the agreed washing and drying conditions.

What it measures

Dimensional change[\[1\]](https://www.iso.org/standard/41877.html "Source 1: iso.org: /standard/41877.html") [\[2\]](https://www.iso.org/standard/75934.html "Source 2: iso.org: /standard/75934.html")

ISO 5077 with ISO 6330

Dimensional change after the specified wash and dry procedures for fabric or garments.

Fabric shrinkage[\[3\]](https://www.aatcc.org/news-read/insights/announcing-the-101st-edition-of-the-aatcc-manual-of-international-test-methods-and-procedures "Source 3: aatcc.org: announcing the 101st edition of the aatcc manual of international test methods and procedures")

AATCC TM135

Dimensional change of fabric after home laundering.

Colourfastness to washing[\[4\]](https://www.iso.org/standard/51276.html "Source 4: iso.org: /standard/51276.html")

ISO 105-C06

Colourfastness under domestic and commercial laundering conditions.

ISO 12947-2

ISO 12945-2

Resistance to pilling, fuzzing and matting by the modified Martindale method.

## Common questions about viscose (rayon)

### Is viscose the same as rayon?

Viscose is the predominant form of rayon; rayon is the broader fibre category.

### Should we choose viscose or cotton for a dress?

Compare the proposed fabrics against the same dress reference. Specify the construction and finish as well as the weight, and approve the required hand. See [cotton](/materials/cotton) for cotton garment options.

### How do modal and lyocell differ from viscose?

Modal is defined by high breaking force and high wet modulus. Lyocell uses direct cellulose dissolution; viscose uses a reaction-dissolution process. See [modal](/materials/modal) and [lyocell](/materials/lyocell) for their garment specifications.

### Does viscose shrink?

Yes, it can shrink unless treated. Set the permitted dimensional change and assess the finished quality under the care conditions in the brief.

### How do we specify stretch for viscose garments?

State the stretch direction and required recovery. Use ASTM D2594/D2594M for stretch and growth of low-power knits with high stretch and good recovery under low tension, or ASTM D3107 for fabrics woven from stretch yarns.[\[7\]](https://store.astm.org/d2594_d2594m-21.html "Source 7: store.astm.org: /d2594_d2594m-21.html") [\[8\]](https://store.astm.org/standards/d3107 "Source 8: store.astm.org: /standards/d3107")

### How long does a viscose garment sample take?

A first garment sample takes 4 to 10 days from an agreed brief. Bulk takes from 35 days after sample approval.

### Can we order viscose fabric without garments?

Yes. We supply viscose and rayon fabric on its own, by the metre. [Fabric supply](/products/fabrics-and-yarns) includes woven and knitted qualities.
