# Switzerland Apparel Labelling: Why Most of It Is Voluntary, and the Fur Exception That Isn't

For ordinary clothing, GINETEX Switzerland states that care, fibre, origin and size markings are voluntary. That is a real delta from the European Union regime. [\[1\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1992/910_910_910/de "Source 1: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/1992/910_910_910/de") [\[2\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/2013/114/de "Source 2: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/2013/114/de") [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

Those voluntary routine apparel fields do not displace the KIG's general declaration rule: where consumer interests require it, a product's essential characteristics must be declared in a comparable form. A statutory declaration, safety warning or import condition can also apply where the product falls within a separate rule. [\[1\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1992/910_910_910/de "Source 1: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/1992/910_910_910/de")

Voluntary does not mean unregulated. A garment or accessory containing fur covered by the Pelzdeklarationsverordnung carries a specific mandatory declaration. Treat this brief as two separate questions: which ordinary-apparel fields are voluntary, and whether a particular product triggers a separate rule, especially the fur declaration. For the shared groundwork on fibre and care labelling generally, see our [garment labelling guide](/blog/2026/06/garment-labelling-care-label-export-requirements). ## What must appear on an apparel label sold in Switzerland by law?

For the four ordinary-apparel fields considered here, GINETEX Switzerland describes fibre, care, size and origin markings as voluntary. That does not settle every product-specific requirement, so the instruments and their scope matter more than a bare no-label conclusion: [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

Instrument [\[1\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1992/910_910_910/de "Source 1: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/1992/910_910_910/de") [\[5\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/2017/63/de "Source 5: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/2017/63/de") [\[2\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/2013/114/de "Source 2: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/2013/114/de")

What it covers

Textile label duty for ordinary clothing?

SR 944.0, Konsumenteninformationsgesetz (KIG)

Framework for consumer declarations, including private agreements and Federal Council ordinances

Not by itself. Check any applicable agreement or ordinance for the product

SR 942.211, Preisbekanntgabeverordnung (PBV)

Price disclosure to consumers

No. A pricing rule, not a composition rule

SR 817.02, Lebensmittel- und Gebrauchsgegenstaendeverordnung (LGV), arts. 47 and 64

Non-obvious safety hazards and powers to set textile safety requirements

Safety information may be required where the rule applies; do not treat it as a general fibre, care, size or origin scheme

SR 232.11, Markenschutzgesetz (MSchG), arts. 47 to 48c

Truthfulness of a voluntary Swiss-origin claim ("Swissness")

No. It polices a claim if one is made; it does not compel origin labelling

SR 944.022, Pelzdeklarationsverordnung

Fur and fur-containing consumer products within its scope

Yes. See the scope and required declaration below

For ordinary clothing, GINETEX Switzerland describes fibre, care, size and origin markings as voluntary. A factory or importer must still check whether the product triggers a separate declaration, safety or import rule before approving the label. Most brands include these fields for commercial reasons covered further down. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

## Does Swiss law require fibre composition, care instructions, size or country of origin?

For ordinary clothing, GINETEX Switzerland describes all four fields as voluntary. The answer is product-specific where another federal rule applies. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

The Konsumenteninformationsgesetz provides the framework for consumer declarations, including private agreements and, in the stated circumstances, Federal Council ordinances. It is not itself a textile-label specification. GINETEX Switzerland describes care, fibre, origin and size markings as voluntary for ordinary clothing. The Preisbekanntgabeverordnung addresses prices, while the Lebensmittel- und Gebrauchsgegenstaendeverordnung can require information about non-obvious safety hazards and supports textile safety rules. [\[1\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1992/910_910_910/de "Source 1: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/1992/910_910_910/de") [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

The detailed consumer-declaration requirements are set by the Federal Consumer Affairs Bureau (BFK) and the responsible product regulator. Obtain the current text from the [BFK](https://www.konsum.admin.ch/de/rechtliche-grundlagen-4) before label artwork is approved. [\[6\]](https://www.konsum.admin.ch/de/rechtliche-grundlagen-4 "Source 6: konsum.admin.ch: rechtliche grundlagen 4")

## What does the Pelzdeklarationsverordnung require for garments containing fur?

Real fur within the ordinance's scope is where the voluntary ordinary-apparel position ends. The Pelzdeklarationsverordnung requires a specific declaration on fur and fur-containing products offered to consumers. The BLV states that a complete declaration contains the five fields set out below and must be directly attached to the product, clearly visible, readily legible and in at least one official federal language. [\[2\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/2013/114/de "Source 2: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/2013/114/de") [\[4\]](https://www.blv.admin.ch/de/pelz "Source 4: blv.admin.ch: /de/pelz")

A parka with a real-fur hood trim, a real-fur-lined glove or a real-fur pom-pom can be a fur-containing product, not just a full fur coat. The ordinance applies to fur and fur products from mammals, but excludes specified domesticated horse, cattle, pig, sheep and goat species, llamas and alpacas; wool and leather products are also outside its scope. Confirm the trim's material, species and origin with the supplier before the tech pack is signed off. [\[4\]](https://www.blv.admin.ch/de/pelz "Source 4: blv.admin.ch: /de/pelz")

The BLV also sets the current rules on fur imports and trade, including transitional arrangements for fur obtained by methods considered cruel to animals. Obtain the current BLV import guidance before placing a fur order. [\[4\]](https://www.blv.admin.ch/de/pelz "Source 4: blv.admin.ch: /de/pelz")

## Does a Switzerland order need EU-style labelling anyway?

For ordinary clothing's fibre, care, size and origin fields, not as a matter of Swiss law. As a matter of how a supply chain runs in practice, usually yes. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

Most garments sold into Switzerland are cut for a collection that also ships into the European Union, and a second label file rarely saves anything once artwork and quality control are costed in. Exporters commonly apply Regulation (EU) 1007/2011-style fibre labelling, ISO care symbols and a size chart to the Swiss-bound garment too, not because those general fields are mandatory for ordinary Swiss clothing, but because the rest of the order already does.

That distinction has to survive into the paperwork. For ordinary clothing, record EU-style fibre, care, size and origin information as a commercial specification, while separately recording any Swiss product-specific obligation that applies.

## How does the Swiss "Swissness" rule differ from a labelling duty?

It governs truth, not disclosure. The Markenschutzgesetz's Swissness provisions, articles 47 to 48c, in force since 1 January 2017, set the conditions for marketing a product as being of Swiss origin. GINETEX Switzerland describes origin marking as voluntary for ordinary clothing. Where a Swiss-origin claim is made, the Swissness provisions govern whether it is truthful. This is a separate question from the commercial decision to include an origin field on a garment label. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

## How should a Switzerland-bound label be approved before bulk?

Lock the decision on which voluntary fields to include before the sample stage, and lock the fur declaration, if the order needs one, at the same time as the bill of materials.

Approval stage

What to lock

Check on the physical garment

Commercial label decision

Which voluntary ordinary-apparel fields to carry: fibre, care, size, origin

Label matches the agreed spec and any applicable product-specific rule

Fur declaration review

Species, scientific name, country of origin, method, and the "Echtpelz" wording

Present and accurate on every style or trim containing real fur covered by the ordinance

Language check

The fur declaration must appear on the product itself in at least one official federal language. That duty attaches to the statutory declaration, not to voluntary brand copy

Wording legible in German, French or Italian as agreed

Bulk inspection

Sealed label artwork

Correct Switzerland variant on the correct style and colourway

A supplier substitution from faux to real fur, or the reverse, can change which row of this table applies. The BLV states that breaches of the fur declaration duty can lead to control-cost fees and fines under Article 11 KIG, so it deserves the same version control as a fibre-percentage change on an EU order. ## Short FAQ

**Is fibre-composition labelling mandatory for clothing sold in Switzerland?**

GINETEX Switzerland describes raw-material marking as voluntary for ordinary clothing. It is common commercial practice; check separately for any product-specific rule. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

**Is care labelling required on a Swiss garment label?**

GINETEX Switzerland describes care marking as voluntary for ordinary clothing. Where it is used, the ISO care-symbol system is common. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

**Does a Swiss label need a country-of-origin mark?**

GINETEX Switzerland describes origin marking as voluntary for ordinary clothing. Origin becomes a regulated question where a claim, particularly a Swiss-origin claim, is made, at which point the Markenschutzgesetz's Swissness provisions govern whether it is truthful. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit")

**What happens if a fur-trimmed garment ships without the required fur declaration?**

It falls short of the Pelzdeklarationsverordnung if the product is within its scope. The BLV requires "Echtpelz", the animal species, its Latin name, the country of origin and the method of obtaining the fur. The BLV controls compliance in Swiss sales outlets and qualifying Swiss online shops, and states that breaches can lead to control-cost fees and fines under Article 11 KIG. [\[2\]](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/2013/114/de "Source 2: fedlex.admin.ch: /eli/cc/2013/114/de")

**Can EU-standard labelling be used to satisfy a Swiss order?**

Yes, as a commercial choice. For ordinary clothing, an EU-style label can carry voluntary fibre, care, size and origin information. It does not replace a Swiss product-specific requirement, such as the fur declaration where that ordinance applies. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit") [\[4\]](https://www.blv.admin.ch/de/pelz "Source 4: blv.admin.ch: /de/pelz")

## The Switzerland label verdict

For ordinary clothing, GINETEX Switzerland describes fibre, care, size and origin marking as voluntary. Genuine fur within the Pelzdeklarationsverordnung's scope is different: its five declaration fields are mandatory. Document EU-style ordinary-apparel fields as commercial decisions, and check separately for product-specific Swiss requirements. [\[3\]](https://www.ginetex.ch/kennzeichnung-weltweit/ "Source 3: ginetex.ch: kennzeichnung weltweit") [\[4\]](https://www.blv.admin.ch/de/pelz "Source 4: blv.admin.ch: /de/pelz")

## Where a Switzerland order fits within the [European Union](/markets/european-union) programme

A collection built for the wider European Union can use its fibre file, care symbols and size chart for a Swiss order as a commercial specification. For ordinary clothing, GINETEX Switzerland describes those fields as voluntary. Check whether the product triggers a Swiss-specific rule, including the fur declaration for covered real-fur products; that declaration must be in at least one official federal language and directly attached to the product. For a brand running a private label programme across both destinations from one composition file, see our [private label](/services/private-label) service.
