# Denmark Apparel Labelling: Danish-Language Rules and the EU Baseline

Kolkata · 22 AUGUST 2026 ·By Surajmal Editorial Team·10 min read

Published 22 August 2026

For a garment sold to a consumer in Denmark, the fibre-content declaration starts at EU level: Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 sets the generic fibre names, the composition percentages and the format every member state shares. The Regulation requires the fibre composition to be supplied by a durable, easily legible, visible and accessible label or marking, with a label securely attached. Its composition information must also be clearly visible to the consumer before purchase, including when the purchase is made by electronic means. The label or marking is provided in the official language or languages of the Member State where the textile products are made available to the consumer, unless that Member State provides otherwise. Care instructions and origin wording should be treated as separate parts of the approved artwork, not as substitutes for the fibre declaration. For the shared groundwork, see our [garment labelling guide](/blog/2026/06/garment-labelling-care-label-export-requirements). ## What must appear on an apparel label sold in Denmark?

Regulation 1007/2011 requires the name and percentage by weight of all constituent fibres, in descending order, using the fibre names set out in the Regulation's own annex, plus a statement of any non-textile parts of animal origin. A fibre accounting for up to 5% of the total weight, or fibres collectively accounting for up to 15%, may instead be shown as “other fibres” with their combined percentage, but only where they cannot easily be stated at the time of manufacture. ## How should care instructions and an origin mark be handled?

SSL prepares Danish-market labels with care symbols, written care instructions, both, or neither, according to your programme and the finished garment's care plan. We can also add an origin statement when it is part of your approved artwork. In each case, keep the care artwork distinct from the fibre-composition information required for the product.

Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 is a fibre-composition rule and does not prescribe origin wording. An origin claim must not be false or misleading in a way that causes, or is likely to cause, the average consumer to take a transactional decision they would not otherwise take. That test applies in the factual context of the claim, including its overall presentation and the characteristics attributed to the garment. [\[1\]](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32011R1007 "Source 1: eur-lex.europa.eu: CELEX:32011R1007")

Care instructions should match the final fabric, finish and approved care plan. SSL records the selected wording and symbol treatment with the artwork so that the buyer can compare it with the sealed bulk sample. This production check does not change the separate requirement to give the fibre composition in the prescribed form. [\[3\]](https://forbrug.dk/regler/virksomheder-vejledning-om-koebeloven/brugsanvisninger "Source 3: forbrug.dk: /regler/virksomheder-vejledning-om-koebeloven/brugsanvisninger")

## What does Danish law require beyond the fibre declaration?

The EU rules set the practical baseline for the fibre declaration. Textile products must be labelled or marked to indicate their fibre composition whenever they are made available on the market. The label or marking must be durable, easily legible, visible and accessible and, where it is a label, securely attached. For catalogues, trade literature, packaging, labels and markings, the fibre-composition descriptions must be easily legible, visible and clear; before an electronic purchase, that information must be clearly visible to the consumer. Where a care symbol is used, it should communicate the instruction selected for the finished garment clearly. Danish wording can sit alongside the symbol where it is included in the approved brief. For a garment expected to receive ordinary machine washing and ironing, SSL can prepare the simpler care treatment set out in your programme after checking the final fabric and finish. The production judgement sits with the fabric and finish actually used, not with the garment category in general, so a change of fabric partway through development can require a fresh check of the care artwork and its fit with the finished product.

For the approval file, SSL hands over the Danish label artwork, the care-symbol key where symbols are used, the written care wording where it is included, and the fabric-and-finish assessment used to select them. It should also identify the fibre-composition source and the online product copy used for an electronic sale. The buyer can compare those items with the sealed bulk sample before release. If a dye, coating, bonded layer, trim or filling changes after approval, send the revised specification for a fresh artwork and composition check before the next revision is sealed.

## Does Denmark have its own rule on children's clothing cords?

Denmark's market-surveillance authority applies EN 14682 to children's clothing cords and drawstrings, with guidance that distinguishes younger from older children. It includes a specific prohibition on functional or decorative cords in the head and neck area of clothing for children up to age seven. This is a product-safety specification, not a textile-fibre labelling rule, and it sits alongside, not instead of, the fibre and language fields above. ## What does a compliant Danish fibre declaration look like?

Fibre statement

Danish wording

Note

Single fibre, 100%

100% bomuld

"bomuld" is the Danish generic name for cotton

Blend example

65% bomuld, 35% polyester

Percentages in descending order

Animal-origin note

Indeholder ikke-tekstile dele af animalsk oprindelse

Used only where such parts are present

A garment shipped to Denmark with an English-only fibre statement is not compliant on language grounds alone, whatever the composition figures say.

## Where does an English-only EU label fall short in Denmark?

An apparel label built to satisfy Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 in English, and assumed to be portable across the EU, misses the field a Danish inspection checks directly.

English-only EU label

Why it falls short in Denmark

Denmark-specific action

Fibre content in English, correct composition

Composition is right; the label or marking for the Danish market needs the applicable official language

Add the Danish fibre declaration and make the composition clearly visible before an electronic purchase

Care artwork not matched to the final garment

The finished fabric or finish may not match the selected instruction

Check the care symbols and wording against the final care plan before sealing artwork

Correct tolerance figures

EU tolerances already apply and need no change

No action beyond the standard EU composition check

Origin statement, if used

It must not be false or misleading under the Directive's context-specific consumer-decision test

Check the claim in its factual context, including whether it causes or is likely to cause a different transactional decision

## How should a Denmark label be released before bulk?

Release the Denmark-market label variant after the bill of materials and the Danish-language artwork are both signed off. A late change to a trim or finish can affect the fibre-composition record or the care artwork, so check both against the finished specification before the artwork is sealed.

Approval stage

What to lock

Check on the physical garment

Composition review

Final fibre names and percentages

Label matches the approved bill of materials

Language review

Danish fibre declaration and any care wording

Danish fibre text present and legible; composition clearly visible before an electronic purchase

Care assessment

Care symbols and wording selected for the finished fabric and finish

Artwork matches the approved care plan and remains separate from fibre-composition information

Bulk inspection

Sealed artwork revision

Correct Denmark variant on the correct style and colourway

The [tech pack](/blog/2026/05/garment-tech-pack-guide) should record the Danish label version, the fibre-composition source and the care-artwork selection against the finished fabric, not the greige state it started from.

## Short FAQ

**Is care labelling mandatory on a Danish apparel label?**

SSL prepares care labels with ISO 3758 symbols, Danish wording, both, or neither, as your programme and finished-garment care plan require. The firm textile-labelling requirement in Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 is the fibre-composition declaration, which must remain clear and separate from other information. [\[3\]](https://forbrug.dk/regler/virksomheder-vejledning-om-koebeloven/brugsanvisninger "Source 3: forbrug.dk: /regler/virksomheder-vejledning-om-koebeloven/brugsanvisninger")

**Is a country-of-origin mark required on a Danish garment label?**

SSL can add an origin statement when it is included in your approved artwork. Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 does not prescribe origin wording. The applicable test is the misleading-actions rule in Directive 2005/29/EC: an origin claim must not be false or misleading in a way that causes, or is likely to cause, the average consumer to take a transactional decision they would not otherwise take. [\[1\]](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32011R1007 "Source 1: eur-lex.europa.eu: CELEX:32011R1007")

**How does the fibre declaration apply to online listings?**

The Regulation requires fibre composition to be supplied by a durable, easily legible, visible and accessible label or marking; where a label is used, it must be securely attached. For an electronic sale, the composition information must be clearly visible to the consumer before purchase. The label or marking for products made available to consumers in Denmark is provided in the applicable official language. [\[2\]](https://www.retsinformation.dk/eli/lta/2021/1046 "Source 2: retsinformation.dk: /eli/lta/2021/1046")

**Who is responsible for the textile-fibre declaration?**

When placing a textile product on the market, the manufacturer must ensure the supply of the label or marking and the accuracy of its information. If the manufacturer is not established in the Union, the importer has that responsibility. A distributor making the product available must ensure it bears the appropriate labelling or marking prescribed by the Regulation. A distributor that sells under its own name or trade mark, attaches the label itself or changes its content is treated as the manufacturer for those purposes. [\[5\]](https://www.sik.dk/sikkerhedsstyrelsen-del-erhvervsstyrelsen "Source 5: sik.dk: sikkerhedsstyrelsen del erhvervsstyrelsen")

**Do children's clothing cords need separate approval for a Danish order?**

Yes, where the garment is childrenswear. Danish guidance applies EN 14682 with an added prohibition on functional or decorative cords in the head and neck area of clothing for children up to age seven. [\[4\]](https://www.sik.dk/erhverv/produkter/saerlige-risikoomraader/regler-sikkert-boernetoej-snore-baand-og-baelter "Source 4: sik.dk: regler sikkert boernetoej snore baand og baelter")

**How should an ISO 3758 care symbol be used on the label?**

Use the symbol that matches the actual instruction in the approved care plan, and include Danish wording where it forms part of the agreed artwork. Keep care information separate from the fibre-composition declaration so the required fibre names and percentages remain easily legible, visible and clear. [\[3\]](https://forbrug.dk/regler/virksomheder-vejledning-om-koebeloven/brugsanvisninger "Source 3: forbrug.dk: /regler/virksomheder-vejledning-om-koebeloven/brugsanvisninger")

## The Denmark label judgement

A Denmark-bound label is the EU fibre declaration in Danish, prepared from the final fibre specification and made durable, easily legible, visible and accessible on the product. For an electronic sale, the fibre composition must be clearly visible before purchase. Where origin wording is included, it must not be false or misleading in a way that causes, or is likely to cause, the average consumer to take a transactional decision they would not otherwise take. SSL checks the final fabric and finish, prepares the Danish text and records the care artwork selected for approval with the label artwork.

## Building the Denmark label into the production file

Send the tech pack, the Denmark-bound quantity by style and colour, and the fabric and finish details once they are set, and the quote that comes back includes the Danish-language fibre label, the electronic product-copy check and the selected care artwork alongside production, not a separate approval booked once bulk is already underway. Record any origin claim beside the evidence for the statement and assess it in the context in which a consumer will see it. For the shared fibre-labelling baseline Denmark sits inside, see the [European Union import guide](/markets/european-union). For a programme built to your own label from tech pack through to bulk, [private label manufacturing](/services/private-label) covers labels, care labels and hang tags prepared to your artwork.
