# Knit vs Woven Fabrics: What Apparel Buyers Need to Know

Knit and woven fabrics differ first in structure: knits are loops and wovens are interlaced yarns. That distinction governs stretch, drape, wrinkle behaviour, garment construction and the information a supplier needs before sampling.

Fibre does not settle the question. Cotton jersey and cotton poplin may share a fibre name but behave as different materials. One follows movement and recovers from a fold; the other holds a pressed line and gives a garment shape. A fabric brief that says only “100% cotton” leaves the most important production decision open.

Establish the construction before discussing the sample, cost or measurement sheet. It helps put a style with the right production capability and makes the approval points visible early.

## What is the structural difference between a knit and a woven?

A woven fabric has two yarn systems held at right angles. Warp yarns run along the length of the cloth; weft, also called filling, runs across it. The yarns pass over and under each other in a repeat. Plain weave, twill and satin are different interlacing patterns. Their locked crossings make the cloth stable and relatively flat.

A knit is built from interlocking loops, arranged in courses and wales. One loop is drawn through the next, in the same basic principle as hand knitting at a far finer and faster scale. Under tension the loops can open and change shape. When released, they can recover. Fibre, yarn twist, finish and elastane all affect the result, but the mechanical give begins with the loop construction.

This is why a woven garment can have stretch without becoming a knit. Elastane in the yarn or a pattern cut on the bias can add give to a woven. Its base construction remains interlaced, so it still cuts, presses and handles differently from jersey.

## How does that structure change the way a fabric behaves?

Knits usually stretch and recover through their loop structure. Plain jersey has give even without elastane, especially across the width. Recovery can be excellent or poor depending on fibre, yarn and finish, so “stretchy” is not a complete performance instruction. State the direction of stretch and the recovery expected after extension.

Wovens have limited give along the grain. Their behaviour is more stable, which helps collars, plackets, waistbands and shaped garments hold their intended form. Drape still varies widely. A fluid viscose woven and a compact cotton twill both use warp and weft, but will not hang alike.

Knits tend to resist creasing because their loops spring back after a fold. Wovens take a pressed crease more readily because the yarn intersections hold it. That makes wovens useful where a crisp line matters, while a knit is often useful where close fit and movement matter. Breathability is a separate property: cover factor, yarn, weight and finish can make either construction suitable for warm conditions.

## What changes on the factory floor?

The construction changes the production method from fabric handling through final pressing. Knits move and relax on the cutting table. A jersey roll may be allowed to relax before cutting, then spread without unnecessary tension so panels do not recover to a different dimension. Cut panels also need the seam type to match the garment's movement.

Overlock joins many knit seams; coverstitch is common at hems; flatlock is used where a low-profile seam matters. A rigid lockstitch on a seam that must extend can cause thread breakage in wear. Collar ribs, neck tape, seam allowance and stitch density also need to be set for the actual knit, not copied from a different jersey.

Wovens are more stable during spreading and cutting, though they introduce their own controls. A stripe, check or directional print has to match across panels. Collars and waistbands may need fusing or interlining. Pressing, placket accuracy and clean seam finishing are visible quality points on a woven shirt or trouser. These are different machine, pattern and operator disciplines.

## Which garments sit on each side?

Knits commonly cover t-shirts, polos, jersey tops and dresses, sweatshirts, hoodies, leggings, underwear, socks and much activewear. Wovens commonly cover shirts, blouses, trousers, chinos, denim, tailored jackets and structured skirts or dresses. Denim is a woven twill, even when elastane gives the finished jean some extension.

Many styles use both. A woven jacket can have knit cuffs, a shirt can use a rib collar, and a dress can combine a stable woven body with knit inserts. Name each component in the bill of materials and state which construction applies to the shell, lining, rib, pocketing or reinforcement. A generic word such as “cotton trim” does not give a supplier enough information to source an equivalent component.

## How is each fabric specified?

Start with the finished construction, fibre composition and weight in grams per square metre (GSM). GSM is useful for comparing weight, cost and hand, as explained in the [fabric weight and GSM guide](/blog/2026/06/fabric-gsm-weight-guide-apparel-buyers), but it does not define the fabric alone. Two 180 GSM fabrics can have completely different cover, recovery, opacity and drape.

For a knit, record the construction, such as single jersey, rib, interlock, piqué, loopback or fleece; yarn count; gauge where relevant; finished GSM; width; and fibre content, including elastane. Add the direction and level of stretch, recovery expectation, shrinkage limit and finish when those affect the garment.

For a woven, record the weave type, warp and weft yarn details, ends and picks per inch where needed, finished GSM, width, fibre content and finish. State whether the cloth is yarn-dyed, piece-dyed, printed, brushed, coated or washed. For stripes, checks and placement prints, include the repeat and matching instruction.

Put those facts in the [tech pack](/blog/2026/05/garment-tech-pack-guide), alongside a swatch or agreed reference where possible. A photograph can communicate colour and styling but cannot settle construction. ## Where do buyers get knit versus woven wrong?

The usual errors begin when a detail from one construction is copied into the other. They are preventable if the sample brief identifies the fabric behaviour that the garment must control.

**Applying woven tolerances to knits.** A structured shirt can hold a close chest tolerance. A jersey tee is extensible and relaxes after production, so it may need a wider tolerance and a stated measuring method: relaxed, on a flat table, with no pull at the points of measure. A measurement sheet without that instruction can create avoidable inspection disputes.

**Ignoring shrinkage and spirality.** Knits may shrink differently in length and width. Tubular jersey can also show spirality, where a side seam twists after washing. Wovens can shrink or skew too, especially after a wash or finish. Set the relevant limit on the finished construction, test against the agreed care method, and approve the result before bulk fabric is committed.

**Using a fabric name as the whole brief.** “Cotton jersey” can describe many weights, yarn counts, finishes and levels of recovery. “Stretch twill” says little about fibre content, construction or extension. Use a fabric code, finished specification and approved swatch so later sample rounds are judged against the same reference.

**Briefing the wrong production capability.** A woven shirt tech pack sent to a jersey-focused unit, or a stretch knit programme sent to a woven shirt specialist, can expose the mismatch only after sampling has begun. Confirm the construction knowledge, machine types, pattern handling and finishing sequence at enquiry.

## Short FAQ

**Is denim a knit or a woven?** Woven. Denim is a warp-faced twill. Stretch denim gets its extension from elastane in the yarn, not from the weave construction.

**Can a woven fabric stretch?** Yes. A woven can gain useful stretch from elastane in the yarn or from a bias-cut pattern, which extends diagonally across the cloth. Its stability and seam behaviour still differ from a knit.

**Why does my knit sample twist at the side seam after washing?** This is usually spirality, also called torque. Loop structure and residual yarn twist can relax during washing and skew the fabric. Raise it during fabric approval, set a limit in the specification and review the washed sample before bulk.

**Do knits and wovens use the same seams?** No. Knits commonly use overlock, coverstitch or flatlock seams that move with the fabric. Wovens are commonly lockstitched, with the seam finish selected for the cloth and garment use.

**Can the same garment use knit and woven fabrics?** Yes. A garment can combine a woven shell with knit cuffs, ribs or panels. Specify every component separately and approve the interaction of the two materials in the sample.

**What are some examples of knitted and woven fabrics?** Knitted: single jersey, interlock, rib, piqué, French terry, loopback and fleece. Woven: poplin, twill, oxford, chambray, canvas, denim and satin. The quickest test by hand is to stretch the cloth across its width. A knit gives and recovers; a woven barely moves except on the bias.

**For a structured garment, is a woven or a knit the better base?** A woven, in most cases. Tailored shirts, trousers, outerwear shells and anything that must hold a pressed edge rely on the stability a woven gives. Choose a knit where the garment has to move with the body, and check the seam and interlining plan against whichever base you pick.

Knit or woven is the first fact to establish about any fabric because it predicts the rest: how the garment moves, how it wrinkles, how it is cut and sewn, which production capability is needed and which parameters belong in the specification. Fibre and weight matter, but construction sets the ground rules.

Name the construction first, then record the finished fabric details, the required performance and the correct measurement method. Approve shrinkage, recovery, appearance and component interaction on the relevant sample. That gives the production programme one workable reference from development through bulk.
