# Denim Sourcing from India: Weights, Washes and What to Specify

Denim looks like a single fabric. It is not. Behind one indigo-dyed twill sit a series of choices that move independently: how heavy the cloth is, whether it stretches, what kind of yarn it is spun from, how the indigo was applied, and which of a dozen washes and finishes the garment passes through after it is sewn. Two "medium blue stretch denims" from two suppliers can arrive looking and behaving nothing alike, because each of those choices was left open.

India is one of the places apparel buyers go for denim, both as fabric and as finished garments, and it repays a buyer who knows what to ask for. Mill capacity and garment capacity are not in the same place, wash houses vary widely in what they can do and how cleanly, and the specification a buyer writes is what holds it all to an agreed result.

This piece covers where India sits in denim, how weight and yarn are described, how indigo dyeing behaves, what the common washes do, and what a buyer should always put in writing.

## Where does India sit in denim sourcing?

India is generally counted among the largest denim fabric producers in the world. The precise ranking and tonnage move year to year, so it is safer to say the capacity is large and well established than to quote a number. What matters for sourcing is the shape of that capacity, not its size.

The fabric mills are concentrated. A large share of India's denim weaving sits in the west, around Gujarat and the Ahmedabad belt, where the big integrated mills spin, dye and weave at scale. Garment making is spread across several clusters, each with its own strengths in cutting, sewing and washing. The practical consequence: the mill that wove your cloth and the unit that sewed and washed your jeans may be far apart, and the wash house is often where the finished look is won or lost. ## How is denim weight specified?

Denim weight is usually quoted in ounces per square yard (oz), not grams per square metre, which is the one place in apparel where the imperial unit is still the default. A "12 oz denim" weighs twelve ounces per square yard. Lighter shirting-weight denims sit around 5 to 8 oz, the everyday jeans range runs roughly 10 to 13 oz, and rigid, structured or workwear denim climbs to 14 oz and above.

Ounces and GSM measure the same property, mass per area, so they convert directly: one ounce per square yard is roughly 33.9 GSM, which puts a 12 oz denim at about 407 GSM. The only trap is comparing a number in ounces against one in GSM as if they were the same scale, so pin down the unit before you compare two [denim qualities](/products/denim).

## Rigid, comfort stretch or high stretch: what is in the yarn?

Weight tells you how heavy the cloth is. It says nothing about whether it stretches, and stretch is now the first question on most denim programmes.

Rigid (or "raw", "non-stretch") denim is 100 percent cotton with no elastane. It holds its shape, breaks in over time and is the traditional character. Comfort-stretch denim adds a small amount of elastane, often around one to three percent, enough to give movement and recovery without changing the look much. High-stretch and "super-stretch" denims carry more elastane and sometimes a dual-core construction, and behave more like a jegging than a jean. Two numbers describe a stretch denim: its stretch percentage (how far it extends) and its recovery (how well it returns). Recovery is the one buyers forget to specify, then complain about when knees bag out after a day's wear.

Yarn character is the other half of the fabric's personality. Ring-spun yarn has an uneven, slightly hairy surface that gives denim depth and a slubby, vintage face after washing. Open-end (rotor-spun) yarn is faster and cheaper to produce and gives a flatter, more uniform, slightly stiffer cloth. Neither is "better": ring-spun warp is prized for fashion denim's character, open-end is sensible for value programmes. What matters is knowing which you are buying, because it changes both the price and the way the wash develops.

## How is indigo denim dyed, and why does shade wander?

Indigo is a surface dye. It sits on the outside of the warp yarn rather than penetrating fully to the core, which is exactly why denim fades the way it does and why the wash menu below has anything to work with. That behaviour also makes indigo less predictable to match than a fully penetrated dye.

At the mill, indigo is applied to the warp before weaving by one of two broad methods. Rope dyeing gathers the yarns into thick rope-like bundles and passes them through repeated baths, which tends to give deep, even penetration and is common on higher-quality fabric. Slasher (or sheet) dyeing runs the warp as a flat sheet through the dye range in a single pass, which is efficient and widely used but can behave differently in shade and wash-down. The takeaway is not to master the chemistry but to expect indigo shade to move between dye lots, and to control it with an agreed shade band rather than a single swatch.

## What do the different denim washes actually do?

Most of what a customer sees in a finished pair of jeans is created after sewing, in the wash. The wash house takes a dark, stiff, rigid garment and turns it into whatever the design calls for, from a clean rinse to a heavily distressed vintage look. The menu is long, and each step carries a cost and, increasingly, a water and effluent implication.

Laser and ozone matter for reasons beyond the look. Both cut water and chemical use sharply against the traditional wet processes, and laser adds repeatability that hand work cannot match. Effluent treatment is a genuine factor in choosing a denim mill or wash house, not a compliance footnote: a unit running heavy stone and acid washes without proper treatment is a regulatory and reputational risk, and the cost of doing wash properly flows straight into the [FOB price](/blog/2026/05/how-garment-fob-price-is-built). Cheaper wash quotes sometimes mean the effluent cost is being externalised rather than absorbed.

## What belongs in a denim specification?

Because so many variables move independently, a denim spec has to nail down more than a woven-shirt spec does. At a minimum, put these in writing:

-   **Fabric weight** in ounces (and the GSM equivalent if it avoids confusion), for the finished, ready-to-cut cloth.
-   **Stretch percentage and recovery**, both numbers, not just the word "stretch". Recovery is what stops the garment bagging.
-   **Shade band**, an approved lightest-to-darkest range rather than one swatch, so normal dye-lot variation has an agreed tolerance.
-   **A wash reference sample**, a sealed and dated garment that defines the approved wash. This is the contractual standard: the whole point of the reference sample is that production is judged against an agreed object, not against a description in an email or an opinion on the day.
-   **Shrinkage tolerance**, because denim moves in the wash and the after-wash measurements are what the customer actually receives.

The wash reference sample is the single most important item. Denim washing is variable by nature, so "vintage medium-blue with whiskering" means little without a physical standard both sides have signed off and both hold a copy of.

## Which QC points are specific to denim?

A standard [pre-shipment inspection and AQL plan](/blog/2026/05/pre-shipment-inspection-aql-guide) covers denim as it covers any garment, but two failure modes are denim-specific and worth calling out to your inspection team and your lab.

The first is crocking, or rubbing colourfastness: indigo's surface-dye character means it can rub off onto skin, other garments and upholstery, both dry and wet. It is tested by rubbing the fabric against a standard white cloth and grading the transfer, and it is a common reason a denim shipment gets held, especially on darker rinses. Set an agreed grade and test to it.

The second is leg twist, also called torque or spirality: after washing, the side seam rotates away from straight, so the seam that should run down the outside of the leg spirals towards the front. It comes from the way the twill is woven and the yarn spun, and is measured as a displacement after a specified number of home washes. A little is normal; too much is a visible fault. Both show up after washing, not before, which is why the approved wash sample and after-wash testing matter more on denim than on most categories.

## Short FAQ

**Is heavier denim always better quality?** No. Weight is a design choice, not a quality grade. A 9 oz stretch denim for a fashion jean and a 14 oz rigid denim for workwear are both correct for their purpose; the right weight is the one that suits the product, specified with a tolerance.

**Why does my repeat order look slightly different from the first?** Most often, dye-lot shade variation or wash variation. Indigo shade moves between lots and wash results vary batch to batch, which is exactly why an approved shade band and a sealed wash reference sample exist. Without them you have no agreed tolerance to hold production to.

**Do I need to worry about elastane in stretch denim over time?** It is worth specifying recovery, not just stretch. Elastane gives movement, but if recovery is poor the garment stretches out and does not spring back, so knees and seat bag after wear. Ask for both numbers and, where it matters, an after-wear or repeated-wash check.

**Is laser or ozone washing just a marketing point?** No, it is a real process difference. Both cut water and chemical use against traditional wet washing, and laser adds repeatability across units that hand-sanding cannot match. They also carry equipment cost, so they suit larger or repeating programmes better than small one-offs.

## The practical takeaway

Denim rewards precision because it hides so many independent variables inside one familiar-looking fabric. Fix the weight, the stretch and recovery, the shade band, the wash reference sample and the shrinkage tolerance in writing, test for the two things denim fails on, crocking and leg twist, and most of what goes wrong is designed out before production starts. A sourcing partner who knows where the fabric mills sit, how the wash houses differ and where effluent cost is hiding turns denim from a fabric that surprises you into one that behaves the way the spec said it would.
